It was a beautiful experience, which I recommend you to live it at least once in your lifetime.
We planned the vacation by ourselves, exactly like we did last year, by using www.booking.com and we did good since everything worked out perfectly. The only piece of advice I would like to offer you is to book you vacation in Santorini a few months in advance in order to have a richer offer and also to pay smaller prices for accommodation. Santorini is a rather expensive destination, but if you book your vacation at least 4 months ahead, there are chances that you will pay at least 20-30% less.
Our travelling group had 5 members (4 adults and a 5 years old child) and we traveled by using the personal car. The only reason we decided to make this choice was the independence that we had in exploring the island once we were there with the car. Nonetheless, you can easily rent on the island scooters, ATVs and cars.
After spending 20 hours driving (1,500 km) and 8 hours by ferry in order to get from Romania to Santorini, the second time I'm not sure I would make the same choice. The cost difference is small, but the effort is double.
The island is part of a group of islands called the Cyclades and has an interesting history in that it was formed as a result of a big volcanic eruption. As a general impression, the island has a rural aspect, with simple houses, painted white, with all sorts of blue details that are enhanced by the blue of the Aegean Sea. The rural aspect is diminished by the presence of many tourists (most of them Greeks, Germans and British), by the presence of the sumptuous ships and by the many blue pools in close competition with the sea.
It is admirable how did these people managed to emphasize the island and attract so many tourists, considering the island is lacking beaches, the climate is almost desert and the vegetation comes down to a few shrubs and cacti.
